When Andrea Petersen volunteered at the Volvo Ocean Race Village inCape Town, she had no idea that she would receive more than generous payment for her pro bono work: a ticket aboard the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing yacht, the winner of the first round of the world tour. She was working on a replica of a VOR 65, a replica of a boat open to the public. She had a monitor on which a recording of a monotype tour with Ian Walker, the Abu Dhabiskipper, was played continuously. One day the exhibit was visited by the yachtsman's parents. Seeing him on the screen, they said, "That's our son!" That's how they got to know Andrea, who admitted to being a big fan of Ian's. The yachtsman's parents told him about their meeting and, suddenly, the childcare worker, who had never set foot on a yacht before, was invited to participate in a professional amateur race. As you can see, she even managed to stand at the helm!
