Halfway to the record

Halfway there! On 6 October, Jean-Luc van den Heede was the first to cross the Golden Globe Race intermediate checkpoint in Tasmania's Stormy Cove. The 73-year-old Dutchman was 1,600 miles ahead of closest pursuer Mark Slats at the time of the checkpoint. If he continues at the same pace, it will take him only 199 days to cover the 30,000-mile distance, which exceeds the boldest computer calculations. Van den Heede himself estimates that he will complete his solo round-the-world non-stop sailing in 210 days with a finish in Les Sables d'Olonne in the first week of February.
