French skipper Lalou Roucayrol 's trimaran in the Route du Rhum transatlantic singles racecapsized Wednesday morning a thousand miles from Guadeloupe. This is the second capsize in a nine-day race with 123 boats competing. The first was the trimaran Armel Le Cleach's Banque Populaire IX.

The photo, taken from the observer plane, shows the 54-year-old French yachtsman sitting on the upside-down centre hull of his Multi50 Arkema. You can clearly see the three orange rudders and centreboard on the bottom of the trimaran, and - slightly less clearly - the sail in the water, still attached to the boat.

According to the Rockairol shore support team, the yachtsman spends most of his time inside the trimaran, rather than outside, waiting for help. Help is on the way in the meantime: one of the Multi 50 Class leaders, Pierre Antoine, is heading for Rocairol on his OLMIX. This morning he was 250 miles southeastof Rocairol. His speed is just over 11 knots. At this speed, the rescuer will be at the wreck site within the next 24 hours.

This is the third time in the history of the «Rum Race» a competitor has been rescued by another competitor. In 1982, Olivier Moussy picked up Ian Johnston and in 2002, Karine Fauconnier was rescued from a sinking trimaran by Bob Escoffier .
