La Belle Classe Superyachts environmental symposium version

Bravo Eugenia is the biggest and «youngest» award winner of this year. The boat designed by Nuvolari Lenard was launched at the end of last year, 2018. Innovative solutions on it at every step: a narrow, optimized hull to reduce the need for a powerful engine, a hybrid motor with a quiet electric mode, no vibration due to the rejection of the drive shaft, which allowed the engine room to be located in a more suitable location - opposite the cabin.
The prize went to the father and son of Dalio, owner of Alucia and founder of OceanX. Although the boat is 45 years old, it is equipped with the most advanced diving and video equipment from a depth of 1 km. Footage from Alucia is used by National Geographic and the creators of the» BBC «Blue Planet series. The goal is to tell as many people as possible how fragile ocean ecosystems are and how much they need to be protected.
Built in 2011, the yacht was designed to minimize fuel consumption (130 litres per hour at 11 knots compared to 500 litres for other boats of this size).«Owner of E&E, Murat Vargi is a member of the Turkish Sea Defenders Association and founder of the Mind Your Litter fund». Plastics are not allowed on board and the crew only uses biodegradable cleaning products. In addition, wherever E&E goes, the crew always collects garbage on the way at sea and on land.
The prize was awarded to the world's last meteorological vessel that was converted to polar explorer. In 2017 it was bought by the founders of Latitude Blanche: Yann Le Bellec and Sophie Galvagnon. A couple of young patrons, who were trained at the Merchant Maritime Academy in Marseille, founded the cruise company in May 2017.
Although the award was established for motor yachts, an exception was made for the Tara sailing boat. He received his award for his scientific expeditions Tara Artic (2006-2008), Tara Océans (2009-2013), Tara Méditerranée (2014) and Tara Pacific (2016-2018). Above all, the Tara expeditions are a story about men and women whose passion is shared by the Yacht Club de Monaco. The club supports this adventure at the intersection of science, technology and education: one of the young members of the Yacht Club de Monaco, Charles Terrin was an assistant during the first project in the Arctic, and Bernard d'Alessandri was an assistant during the Tara Océans.

During Monaco Ocean Week, which took place from 24 to 30 March, the Yacht Club de Monaco organised the 9th La Belle Classe Superyachts Environmental Symposium. This year the meeting had a new format: the whole day was dedicated to one theme, formulated as «Yachting: laboratory of the future / transport for ocean protection». Around 25 speakers from all over Europe addressed boat owners, industry professionals and other interested parties. Discussions covered new yachting routes, environmentally friendly anchorage and new energy sources for propulsion systems.

The day culminated in the presentation of the inaugural La Belle Classe Explorer Awards presented by the Yacht Club de Monaco. The reigning Prince of Monaco His Serene Highness Albert II presented prizes to the winners in five categories. A total of 79 superyachts were nominated for the awards.

«The main criterion by which a candidate for an award is judged is not their ambition to discover new lands, but how a superyacht is designed, why it is used, how it can be used for the benefit of mankind. It could be a technical innovation that has significantly reduced CO2 emissions into the sea, the assistance of scientists, or simply the team's ability to communicate and share their achievements in a way that benefits a large number of people, that more and moremore and more of us understand the need to respect, love and protect the ocean»," explains Bernard d' Alessandri, general secretary of the Yacht Club de Monaco.

The jury was made up of representatives from the Prince of Monaco Foundation, the Oceanographic Museum, the Ifremer Oceanographic Institute, the American, French and Monegasque societies, naval architects and travellers.
