The Miami Boat Show kicks off today with the first showing of an exact replica of writer Ernest Hemingway's fishing boat Pilar. The creation of the replica was funded by actor and screenwriter Andy Garcia and his friend Mike Fernandez. They spent about a million dollars and three years to get a replica of Pilar. The replica will play a starring role in a film about Hemingway's life that Garcia envisioned making. The replica was based on a real boat manufactured by Wheeler, built 85 years ago - the sister ship the writer owned. Its only difference from the original is a modern engine and air conditioning in the cabin. The real Pilar is on display at the Hemingway Museum in Havana .
