The three-masted sailing ship Stad Amsterdam was designed by Gerard Dijkstroj, who based it on the mid-19th century frigate Amsterdam, but the modern vessel is not an exact replica, if only because its hull is made of steel. Interestingly, the making of the hull was part of a larger social assistance project for the unemployed, who were employed in a multitude of jobs, from sandblasting metal to welding. Stad Amsterdam is used as a training vessel and as a charter vessel, and she often participates in the Tall Ship's Race. Like all of Dijkstra's projects, Stad Amsterdam is a very fast boat, with a normal speed of 15 knots.
