In 1928, the 137-foot superyacht Elena won the 3,400-mile transatlantic race from New York to Santander, and here - history repeats itself! An old design and new technology have created a very high quality replica of the famous vessel. Reviving the old racer was a monumental task, with engineers and designers going through hundreds of old drawings provided by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and countless sketches and outlines from the Herreshoff Design Office. Construction of the original yacht began in 1910. Elena became one of the finest racing yachts of her time and won many races over the course of 17 long years. Her owners over the years have included such notables as Cornelius Vanderbilt and William Bell. The original blueprints for the Elena were put into a computer. To everyone's surprise, it turned out that the historical contours were the best in terms of both speed qualities and internal volumes. After a long calculation of hundreds of combinations of wind-wave situation and different combinations of sails, it was recognized that it was impossible to improve the original design. Historical accuracy was decided in the details - the masts, for example, are made of wood: Oregon pine and Alaskan spruce were used for them. The interiors are exquisite and, of course, in the classic style based on Herreshoff's original drawings: the mahogany panels are accentuated by white underwires with dark beams.
