More About Aft-Cockpit Cruisers

Aft cockpit sailing cruisers are the most widely built production sailboat type. The cockpit sits at the stern, leaving the full length of the hull available for below-deck accommodation — typically a double forecabin, saloon, and one or two aft cabins depending on length. The stern is wide and open, with twin rudders, helm stations, and sail controls brought aft to the cockpit. A bimini provides optional weather protection over the seating area.

Compared to centre cockpit layouts, aft cockpit boats have lower freeboard aft — making boarding easier, improving visibility under the genoa, and simplifying marina manoeuvring. The boom can be set lower without risk of hitting crew in the cockpit. The trade-off is a smaller aft cabin, particularly on 35–40 foot boats where the cockpit competes for space with the sleeping quarters below.

Most aft cockpit cruisers are built from GRP using vacuum infusion — gelcoat and fibreglass cloth laid into a mould and impregnated with resin. Aluminium hulls are also common in this category, particularly for bluewater cruisers, as aluminium deforms rather than cracks on grounding. Carbon fibre is used on sport cruiser variants. Fin keels with lead ballast are standard; centreboards and lifting keels are available for shallow-water sailing.
