On Saturday evening, 30 May, the 40-metre Bering motor yacht Familia began taking on water at the rear of Sinop's central pier, on Turkey's Black Sea coast. By Sunday morning, only her superstructure was still above the surface. AIS records show her signal cut at 02.51 local time. All six crew were evacuated unharmed.
The yacht had arrived in Sinop two days earlier, on 28 May. Local witnesses saw her heel over within minutes and alerted harbour authorities; pollution-control and salvage teams reached the site by morning. As of 3 June, Familia has not been refloated.
Refit at Mengi Yay (October 2025 – April 2026)
Familia had relaunched from Mengi Yay shipyard in Tuzla just six weeks earlier — in April 2026, after six months under refit (Project R16, by Mengi Yay's refit arm Reviva Refit). The headline scope: the hull was "nearly cut through" at midship and lengthened by two metres, growing from 37.43m to 40.04m. The stated objective, in Reviva's own words to the trade press, was to "enhance operational capabilities and improve stability and seakeeping."

Cause: officially undetermined
Familia was the first hull of Bering Yachts' B121 series, delivered in 2024 as Phnx and renamed after the refit. Bering, based in Turkey's Antalya Free Zone, has built its reputation on rugged, explorer-style steel yachts; the B121 was its step up into the 40m segment. The yacht was originally classed by Lloyd's Register, and the refit recertified her to RINA Commercial Unrestricted Navigation.
Other work in Tuzla included converting the beach club into a tender garage, a new starboard shell door with overhead lifting gear, a new upper-deck staircase, and a full exterior repaint. Turkish press estimates the post-refit value at around two billion lira (roughly $50–55 million), though by industry valuations a yacht of this class typically sits closer to $20–25 million.
The official cause has not been announced. The yacht was alongside in a calm harbour. There was no fire, collision, or grounding. Heavy rain was reported on the evening in question, but local authorities have not blamed weather. Bering Yachts, Mengi Yay, and the (Palau-flagged) owner have not commented on the record.
One theory is already in print. Antalya Ekspres, citing unnamed experts, has suggested that Familia may have gone down because of an inconsistency in the stability calculations performed during the lengthening. That remains speculation.
Second incident in two years
In March 2024, the 24-metre Dolce Vento sank minutes after launch at Medyılmaz Shipyard in Turkey. Familia is the second loss of a yacht at a Turkish yard within two years. Bering operates from Antalya; Mengi Yay from Tuzla. Both are among the more active builders in the country's current superyacht segment.
For now, six crew are safe, no pollution has been reported, and the salvage continues. The harder accounting will follow the inquiry.
