About

The Lurssen Yachts History of the company

The 24-year-old Friedrich Lürssen founded his boatbuilding workshop in Aumund, Germany, in 1875. Initially, the company built racing rowboats which began to win regattas and quickly gained popularity throughout Germany. In 1886, they produced the world's first motorboat, a 6-meter boat named Rems for Gottlieb Daimler, who commissioned it to test a new engine. In the early 1900s, the company expanded to the shoreline, and Otto Lürssen, Friedrich's son, joined the company in 1907, contributing new technical expertise. During this period, Lürssen produced innovative and record-breaking speedboats including in 1905, the Donnerwetter racing boat, designed by Otto Lürssen, which had a speed of almost 35 knots with a 40hp engine.

Under Otto Lürssen's leadership, the company continued to make strides in speedboat and motoryacht development and in 1927 Lürssen built the world's longest motor yacht to date, the 36-metre Aar IV. After Otto's death in 1932, his wife Frieda Lürssen took charge of the company. Gert Lürssen, Otto's son, later joined the company in 1938, bringing with him his passion for fast motorboats. During this period, Lürssen continued to produce record-breaking vessels, including setting a world speed record in 1939.

After World War II, Gert and his brother Fritz-Otto Lürssen took over the company in 1962 and the shipyard entered a new era with the construction of the 55-meter Pegasus II. In 1971, Lürssen introduced the innovative yacht Carinthia VI, again redefining yacht design. The company continued to expand, and by the mid-1980s, they completed the transfer of shipbuilding work to Lemwerder.

During the 1980s, Lürssen established a new yacht division, acquired the Kröger Werft shipyard near Rendsburg, and focused on yacht production. Friedrich and Peter Lürssen, representing the fourth generation of the family, joined the company in the late 1970s and 1980s. The company continued to expand and innovate, acquiring the Neue Jadewerft shipyard in Wilhelmshaven in 2004 and producing groundbreaking yachts such as the 97-meter Limitless.

Lürssen continued its expansion by acquiring Hamburg based Norderwerft and the Wolgast based Peene Werft shipyards in the early 2010s. The company produced record-breaking yachts, such as the 180.65-meter Azzam and the 15,917-ton Dilbar. In 2016, Lürssen acquired the Blohm+Voss shipyard, further expanding their capacities. Despite a devastating fire in 2018 at one of the company's docks, which destroyed the Project Sassi's 140-metre yacht which was under construction, Lurssen has continued on at full speed producing a succession of award winning superyachts. Today Lürssen is one of the most powerful shipyards on the market, with all the shareholders still being members of the original Lurssen family founders.
