About
The History of Sunseeker Yachts
The story of Sunseeker began in 1969 in the seaside town of Poole in the county of Dorset in southern England. Its creator, Robert Braithwaite, was able to lay the foundations for the current yacht giant on the basis of Poole Powerboats, a distributor of European and American brands of sports boats. His interest in speed, as well as his interest innovation in the shipbuilding industry, led to the use of materials and technologies that were a revelation at the time.
The shipyard's debut and highly successful first models were the Sovereign 17 and 20, launched in the early 1970s. Later, Sunseeker boats were designed by the renowned racing boat designer Don Shead. Under his leadership, the conquest of the Mediterranean market began with the production of innovative cruisers such as the breakthrough Offshore 28 with its excellent speed performance. It was during this time that the company decided to change its name to Sunseeker International.
In an effort to increase the size of the models, the Sunseeker launched the Renegade 60, which was the first of its yachts to receive dual jet drives, giving the yacht excellent speed and manoeuvrability. In the mid 1990's the manufacturer began to conquer the superyacht segment with the launch of the Predator 80, followed in 2001 by the Sunseeker 105.
The 2008 financial crisis did not leave the company unscathed, it was in debt and was acquired in 2010 by FL Partners, an Irish investment group and in 2013 ownership was transferred to the Chinese Dalian Wanda Group. Today, the majority of the company's vessels are exported, over 150 per year, making Sunseeker one of the leading shipyards worldwide and the largest in Britain.
Production Facilities
Sunseeker's main office and main facilities, 9 production sites in total including one with a deep-water bay for the construction of large vessels, are located in Poole on the southern coast of England. There, the firm's roughly 2500 strong specialist workforce are building luxury motor yachts of both custom and semi-custom type by hand. Customers wishing to build a yacht over 100 feet long are offered a unique bespoke service allowing the customer to essentially create the yacht of his dreams from scratch.
Yacht Features
Sunseeker is undoubtedly an icon of the British yachting industry and its boats are the embodiment of British style in yachting. Sleek on the outside and plush on the inside they are immediately indentifiable and represent Britain on the world stage in multiple ways, including staring performances in four recent James Bond movies, the epitomy of British suave luxury.
Sunseeker Model Lines
Sunseeker is building production yachts from 11 to 49 meters (36 to 160 feet) in the luxury yachting segment with models currently divided into 5 main families. With a largely singular overall design concept, Sunseeker yachts are well recognisable whatever the family they belong to.
The Performance Range is Sunseeker's high performance open yacht series. In one corner sits the 11.85 meter Sunseeker Hawk 38, a clear throwback to the company's racing roots with a top speed of over 60 knots. The other model of the series is the larger 17.3 meter Sunseeker Superhawk 55, a reinvention of Sunseeker's open yacht sports cruiser for a new generation with the ability to comfortably host six guests while thrilling them with speeds of upwards of 40 knots.
The Predator Range continues Sunseeker's passion for speed with a series of low profile, mid size enclosed yachts with plenty of flair and performance rolled into one. The flagship model is the Sunseeker Predator 74, a 23 meter yacht with four cabins. At the other end of the spectrum is the entry level Sunseeker Predator 55 EVO at 17 meters and two cabins.
The Yacht Series is the Sunseeker classic flybridge cruiser, available in models ranging from 23.6 to 48 meters. The Yacht series features boats with a variety of styles with the flagship Sunseeker 131 Yacht and slightly smaller Sunseeker 116 striking particularly formal looks. Complimenting the yacht series flybridges is the Sport Yacht Series of sportsbridge yachts between 20 and 23 meters with the 65 Sport Yacht winning the award for the Best Exterior Design in the 64'-80' category at the World Yacht Trophies 2021.
The Manhattan Series is built on an award-winning, spacious mid-sized flybridge yacht that demonstrates new standards of comfort and relaxation. The series is currently represented by the Manhattan 55 and Manhattan 68 models.
Finally, the Ocean Series is a series of wide beam, extended superstructure yachts with huge amounts of configurable spaces for their owners. The Ocean Series is designed to be placed in parallel to the Yacht Series with an emphasis on space options customised for each client. Indeed Sunseeker and so proud of the spaces made available in the new Ocean Series models announced in 2022 that they have switched their naming convention, introducing the Ocean 156 and Ocean 182 with the names based on gross tonnage rather than length to do more justice to their interior spaces.
