On Friday 21 August, during Hamilton Island Race Week in Queensland, the 25-metre sailing yacht Viva La Vida ran onto a shallow patch under spinnaker at speed. The bottom of her keel — the ballast bulb — came away. The crew sent a Mayday, all ten people aboard were taken off by another boat, and the pumps could not keep up with the water. She rolled over and sank in the Whitsunday Passage.

Nobody was hurt. What makes this more than a race-week grounding is the hull number. Viva La Vida was an Oyster 825, hull 825-07, launched in 2019 — the last of seven boats in the series. Eleven years ago another 825 lost her ballast and sank, and that one nearly took the shipyard down with it.

Aground in the Whitsundays

What she hit is believed to be rock or reef. Photographs taken after the capsize show the lower ballast section gone and a good part of the keel structure still attached to the hull.

The owners are Barry and Susie Parkin, both Olympic sailors — Barry raced a Soling at Sydney 2000, Susie sailed the 470 class at three Games. Scuttlebutt later published a correction saying the boat was owned by four friends from Riverside and New York yacht clubs, with Barry Parkin among them.

The yacht had been on the Oyster World Rally since January, a sixteen-month circumnavigation of roughly 27,000 miles with 22 other Oysters. Hamilton Island was a stop along the way. She had won the first race of her division on corrected time before the accident and finished sixth overall after retiring.

The regatta organisers did not mention the incident in any of their press releases.

What Oyster will and will not say

Oyster's statement, published on 25 August, is careful:

A full technical assessment depends on recovery and detailed examination of the yacht. Until that work is complete, it would be premature to draw conclusions about the cause, nature or extent of the damage.

The yard also said it is in direct contact with the owners and will cooperate with authorities and insurers, and support any review of the circumstances.

The boat is still on the bottom, so there is not much else the yard could honestly say. Where the water came in, whether the hull was damaged beyond the keel, and how a grounding turned into a total loss are all open questions until she is raised.

The boat that broke the shipyard

In July 2015, the Oyster 825 Polina Star III — hull 825-02, owned by Alexander Ezhkov — was sailing off Alicante in about 18 knots of true wind and a metre and a half of sea. Ordinary conditions. She had been in the water a little over a year.

There was no impact of any kind. A crack, then vibration. The engine room flooded. Six minutes after the first noise the keel had torn away completely and the yacht was upside down. Five crew were picked up by the Spanish coastguard. She sank in about 40 metres.

When the wreck was raised that October, the keel showed no impact damage — no deformed leading edge, nothing to suggest she had hit anything. What had failed was the boat itself. The laminate in the T-joints between the hull matrix and the keel structure had come apart, tearing out close to 20 square metres of hull skin with it.

The keel bolts were intact. David Tydeman, then Oyster's chief executive, put it plainly: none of the keel bolts failed.

There had been a warning. A surveyor's report from March 2015 — four months before the sinking — recorded movement of the ballast keel along its joint with the hull stub as "excessive."

What the yard found, and what it cost

Oyster ran the investigation itself, with outside experts, alongside the insurer's surveyors. The conclusion, published over the winter of 2015–2016: the joints in the keel stub had failed, so loads from the keel were transferred off the structural matrix and onto the hull skin. The cause was bad lamination in a fabricated assembly.

The yard then inspected two other early 825s and found small cracks and large areas of poor lamination in the same critical joints. Hulls 825-01 and 825-03 were rebuilt and reinforced. From hull 825-05 the yard went back to its previous method of building the internal structure. Oyster said the process at fault had not been used on any other yacht in around forty years and would not be used again.

There was no recall. The work was done boat by boat.

The bill was another matter. The claim over Polina Star III — roughly £7 million — became the reason Oyster Marine Holdings went into administration in February 2018 with KPMG appointed. A month later Richard Hadida bought the company, and the Polina Star III liabilities were left out of the deal. Production restarted at Wroxham that May, with all hulls moulded in-house and a Lloyd's Register surveyor inspecting through the build.

The wreck itself had a second life. Raised, shipped to England, laid up for two years, then bought and rebuilt over thirteen months as Champagne Hippy. She relaunched in 2019 — the same year hull 825-07 went into the water as Viva La Vida.

Two hulls out of seven

Two of seven hulls in the Oyster 825 series have now lost their ballast. That is a real number, and it is small enough to be uncomfortable.

What the fact does not establish is a common cause. The two failures look different in every respect that has been documented:

Marine Industry News states it directly: no technical connection between the two incidents has been established. The German magazine Yacht notes the damage patterns differ significantly. Oyster is asking everyone to wait for the recovery.

In 2015 a production defect sank a boat, and the yard proved it and paid for it. In 2026 a boat hit something hard and did not survive it. Whether a 25-metre bluewater cruiser ought to survive that grounding is a fair question. Nobody can answer it from photographs.

The interested party

Within three days of the sinking, Kraken Yachts sent out a newsletter headed "Oyster 825 Losses Keel off the coast of Australia." Two days after that, Kraken founder Dick Beaumont appeared in an Ocean Sailor video explaining why he believes bolt-on keels are a fundamental safety risk to bluewater sailors, and why Kraken's integral Zero Keel design was engineered to remove that risk.

Kraken builds boats. It has campaigned against bolt-on keels for years, and it called this a keel loss before the yacht had been raised — while photographs show the upper keel still attached and the builder is declining to draw conclusions.

There is also an inconvenience in the argument. In the 2015 case the keel bolts were exactly what did not fail. What failed was laminate in the hull structure, which is not the thing the bolt-versus-integral debate is about.

Nothing is settled until she comes up

Until Viva La Vida is on the surface and somebody has looked at her properly, the cause is opinion.

What can be said today: seven Oyster 825s were built, two have lost their ballast, one of those was a proven manufacturing defect that put the yard into administration and got it sold, and the other happened at speed on a reef in Queensland. Those are separate sentences on purpose.
