Holding the title of the flagship of the walk-around series, the Sun Odyssey 490 was obliged to redefine innovation, performance, and comfort. The challenge was well taken up by Phillippe Briand and Jean-Marc Piaton who designed a masterpiece that not only sets a benchmark for the Sun Odyssey range but also revolutionizes the expectations from a 50 foot cruising yacht. Lombard’s design further increased the hull volume, thus offering impressive sailing performance, compounded interior space for guest comfort, and ample lounge areas topside.
Like every Sun Odyssey, this one too boasts carefully designed cockpit ergonomics with every sheet smartly led to the helm station allowing the boat to be easily single or double handed. The enormous cockpit lounge is bordered by the trademark walk around decks, easing movement around the boat. The convertibility of the coamings into unfolding seat backs and transforming into a cushioned sunbathing deck is a phenomenal attribute.
Light beams upon the open-concept interior with the main salon dotted by numerous rows of windows and hatches. The strategically located central U-shaped galley serves both, comfort whilst sailing and serving in the salon. The nav station is particularly highlighted in the 490, with an added aft facing bench, converting it into a cozy coffee corner or a workspace.
The forward stateroom truly sets this boat apart. The square queen bed offers ample walk-around space and the central armoire ideally accommodates a television for viewing in bed. The classy shower stall being placed on centerline offers 6'6'' headroom; a luxury rarely seen on boats of this size.
