Tyde Icon: Model Info

The Icon by Tyde, a 42-foot all-electric foiling vessel designed in collaboration with BMW and Torqeedo. This innovative boat merges the aesthetics of an upscale furniture showroom with the engineering prowess of a light aircraft. Its unique design and technology challenge traditional boating norms, creating an unprecedented on-water experience.

Driving

Behind The Icon lies serious pedigree. One co-founder was behind Torqeedo, and the other led innovation at BMW. The naval architecture and build were done by J&J in Slovenia, while the foiling system was designed by Guillaume Verdier, known for America's Cup racing boats. This results in an extraordinary experience—hovering above the water at 25 knots in near silence, unaffected by the waves below.

Regarding range, the foiling technology makes The Icon 80% more efficient than a planing monohull. After four to five hours of use, the battery still shows 55% remaining, offering a range of 50 nautical miles at 24 knots. With advancements in battery technology, this range is expected to increase to 150 nautical miles in the next five years, making it even more practical for day boating.

The helm offers an extraordinary view with its unique design, though it has a central blind spot. The all-round visibility through the side windows compensates for this, offering an unparalleled perspective while gliding over the water. To demonstrate the ride comfort, a switch to a chase boat highlights the seamless transition and stability of The Icon, even in rough conditions.

How It Works

Underneath The Icon, the real magic happens. It houses a 240-kilowatt-hour battery bank, significantly larger than that of a Tesla Model Y. This powers a pair of 100-kilowatt electric motors, driving counter-rotating propellers connected to a T-shaped foil at the aft end and a stainless steel and carbon fiber T-foil forward. A built-in gyroscope maintains optimal trim and heel, reacting within a thousandth of a second.

On Deck

The deck layout of The Icon is simple yet efficient. The rear area is dedicated to storage and boarding, with a platform and extending passerelle. Overhead glazing provides protection, and twin charging points are conveniently located here. Inside, the plush carpet and stylish furniture create a luxurious atmosphere. There are stand-up and sit-down desks, surrounded by expansive glass windows offering a panoramic view.

The helm station is set centrally, featuring a 32-inch 6K screen for navigation and control. The seating arrangement is designed for comfort, with swivel chairs and airplane-style seatbelts for added safety. The air conditioning system ensures a comfortable environment, despite the extensive glass surfaces.

The Helm

The helm of The Icon is a masterpiece of interactivity. The 32-inch screen offers intuitive control over navigation, trip data, weather, and all onboard systems. The digital switching and clear display make it easy to manage everything from lights to the powertrain. The helm design draws inspiration from BMW, combining style and functionality seamlessly.

Slow Speed Handling

Slow speed control is familiar to those used to joystick boats. The twin motors, combined with bow and stern thrusters, allow for precise maneuvering. The thrusters retract when not in use to maintain smooth foiling. The joystick enables easy sideways movement and rotation, making docking straightforward.

Can You Trust Foils?

The foils are designed to shear off in case of collision, protecting the hull's structural integrity. While the fixed foils create a draft of about 2.4 meters, future models may feature retractable foils for shallower waters. Despite potential concerns, the design ensures that even if a foil is lost, the boat remains functional.

Hans Zimmer Effect

Hans Zimmer's orchestral compositions enhance the experience, playing as the boat transitions onto or off the foils. This unique feature adds to the futuristic feel of The Icon, making each ride memorable.

Handling

Steering The Icon on foils requires wider turns, but the yoke-like wheel provides smooth control. It feels more like piloting than traditional boating, with a wide turning circle and stable, quiet ride. The experience is akin to driving a luxury car, emphasizing passenger comfort and enjoyment.

Verdict

The Icon represents a glimpse into the future of boating. While currently targeted at high-end resorts as a luxury shuttle, its technological advancements hold promise for broader applications. With further development, The Icon's innovative foiling and electric propulsion could redefine day boats and weekenders.
