Turquoise Yachts builds 56-metre explorer that looks like a steam vessel

Turquoise Yachts is building a 56-metre expedition vessel with an exterior designed in a classic style reminiscent of early 20th century steam ships.

This is a case where appearances can be deceiving: the romantic, retro-styled exterior by designer Andre Hoek conceals the high-tech stuffing of a modern ice-class vessel, which can cruise the Northwest Passage to explore the Earth's polar regions.

For example, a composite material tube hides the latest generation satellite communications antenna, and a shuttle-shaped aft landing platform with retractable ladder.

The Explorer will be equipped with IMO Tier III diesel-electric propulsion system. Her modern interiors with teak finishing elements will complement her classic lines to create a cozy area for relaxation.

Construction of the vessel began in the third quarter of last year. The shipyard plans to deliver her to the client in February 2019.
