The Gitana sailing team has published a video showing the power of the new Edmond De Rothschild 32-metre trimaran.

The video shows all three hulls rising above the surface of the water while sailing, despite weighing 15.5 tons.

«Upon their return to shore, Sébastien Josse said that there was an air of excitement, surprise, and pride, and the moment the yacht» took off was breathtaking.

Built for speed, Gitana 17 is certainly inferior in comfort to multi-deck superyachts. However, she is widely regarded as the largest trimaran in the world.

At 32 metres in length, she is more than twice the size of the catamarans competing in this year's America's Cup in Bermuda.

The global goal for the Edmond De Rothschild crew is to sail around the world in 2019-2020. But before that, they intend to compete in the Transat Jacques Vabre race, which begins on November 5 in Le Havre, France.

Hydrofoil technology only really attracted attention in 2013, at the 34th America's Cup, when huge catamarans flying over water shook the world by showing the fruits of the developments of recent years.

Although the organisers have not yet decided on the format of the 36th America's Cup, it is clear that Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron is looking forward to such events.
