Shipyard with 120 years of history closes in Britain

The British shipyard Broom Boats British shipyard Oyster Yachts announced that from this year it will stop producing boats. The company's management intends to keep the famous brand name alive, so they will continue to develop their three remaining areas: rental boats, maintenance and yacht marina.

Representatives of Broom Boats explained that the previous few years were unprofitable for the shipyard. Rising material costs and falling demand for the construction of luxury boats forced them to close the production unit, which led to the dismissal of about 20 employees.

The history of Broom Boats goes back to 1898.

«Its founder, Charles John Broom, was building beautifully finished sailing cruisers for gentlemen» and was one of the first to rent out his boats. In the 1920s, with the advent of lightweight boat engines, the yard shifted its focus to making motorboats.

Over the years the company has built an excellent reputation in the boating world. Broom boats have graced London Boat Show from the very first boat show in 1954, and have also participated in many other international events, including the Boat Show in Southampton и Dusseldorf.

Katinka, a 43' cruiser built in 1961, is still in pristine condition and is being used by celebrity chef and TV personality Jamie Oliver.

Broom Boats is not the only British yard with a long history in financial difficulty. Oyster YachtsThe company, which was suddenly declared bankrupt just over a month ago, has changed owners and is now owned by the founder and creative director of online casino software developer Evolution Gaming, Richard Hadida.
