Volvo Ocean Race leader Spanish team MAPFRE suspended the race on stage 7 due to a mast breakdown.

The Volvo Ocean Race fleet was approaching Cape Horn when MAPFRE temporarily dropped out of the race.

The team decided to take a breather to repair the mast chase and torn mainsail while 6 miles west of the famous cape.

MAPFRE's skipper, Habi Fernandez, chose the right time to make the repairs: the high-pressure zone is predicted to slow the leaders down soon, and the laggards (which now include the Spanish boat) will have an opportunity to catch up with them.

A section of the chase section peeled off the mast five days ago, but until now the team has managed to compensate for the impact of the breakage on their progress with various combinations of temporary sailing equipment.

According to Volvo Ocean Race rules, a team that has suspended a race may not resume racing until 12 hours later.

The team must start from the same place where it has left the course.

While MAPFRE is mending, the remaining circumnavigators have rounded Cape Horn. Bonus point for the first rounding of the cape went to Team Brunel.
