Gitana IV was built for Baron Edmond Rothschild, joining his fleet of yachts with similar names. Launched in 1963, Gitana IV was to lead her owner into the world of sailing racing with her outstanding speed. In her first year, she broke the record for the Fastnet Race, set by Nordwind back in 1939. In the following years she won numerous "on arrival" (no handicap) victories in many Mediterranean regattas (such as the famous La Giraglia race), thus establishing an excellent international racing reputation. She has not undergone any major refits or alterations, but her mainsail and standing rigging have been recently replaced. She is currently for sale.
