Lucia A was designed by John Alden and built in 1940 at the George Lawley & Sons shipyards for Thomas Sheppard with the classic layout of the time: redwood planking on an oak kit. She was originally named Irondequoit II armed with a yoke, but after her first season the owner removed the bisan and the yacht became a tender, a condition she held until her owner's death in 1963.
After that, she changed owners, names, and bases many times, from Massachusetts to Florida to the Great Lakes, until she was finally purchased in 1998 by Greek shipping magnate George Embirikos. He undertook a thorough three-year renovation-almost everything on the yacht was replaced except for the major kit parts. At the same time, she received her original two-mast and her current name.
After 2002, the boat returned to active life, and today Lucia A can be seen at many classic yacht regattas, from Antigua to the Mediterranean.
