Selling Brokers Lobster Boats and Gozzo Boats
Category Description
Lobster Boats were originally workboats of the Northeast. These boats were used by the fishermen of Maine for setting, checking and collecting lobster traps. The classic Down East lobster boat is a semi-displacement vessel with a high flared bow, low freeboard amidships and a pronounced tumblehome at the stern, where there is a big open deck space. All design features are not random and have an utilitarian function. So, a high nose is designed to cut the waves of the Atlantic coast. The low stern and free zone on the aft makes it easier to manipulate the traps. Underwater a lobster boat has a long keel which protects props. The underwater part of the hul is round bilged.
Gozzo boats originate from Italian fishing boats. You have probably seen photos of the Ligurian coast of Italy with its rocky shores surrounded by colorful pot-bellied boats. These are gozzo. Initially, these boats were built entirely of wood. Today, they are built primarily from fiberglass, although there are a few old-school manufacturers that use wood. Traditional oars gave way to classic diesel engines located in a small compartment amidships. In addition to oars some oldschool gozzo boats were equipped with latin sail. In particular, such configuration was used on gozzo Sorrentino boats.
The peculiarity of the gozzo boat hull is the fact that its bow and stern look almost identical, as if the boat had two bows.
But today boats which are labeled as “lobster” and “gozzo” by manufacturers are far from the original definition. These boats only resemble good old boats. Modern lobster and gozzo boats are a romantic nod to the good old days on the exterior while retaining all the latest in yacht building in terms of performance and comfort on board. One can define a “lobster” boat by a high bow and lowered freeboard and “gozzo” by rounded aft part of the boat (including swimming platform). The Zeelander brand is one of the brightest representatives of the breed of reimagined lobster bots and the Apreamare is one of the biggest names in rethinking the gozzo concept.
If you miss the old days when sailing was more of an art than business and dream of a beautiful retro style boat, check out our current yacht catalog. We have collected offers of new and used gozzo and lobster boats in one place and added a comparison function to the personal area for your convenience. To use the function, go through a simple registration procedure. It is also required if you would like to list a boat on itBoat.com.
How are lobster boats and gozzo boats built?
Modern Lobster and Gozzo boats are built from GRP. The production models are made in molds using a method of vacuum infusion, when resin is infused into the layers of fiber cloth, making it strong. As a tribute to tradition, modern boats use lacquered wood for decoration and teak on decks.
However, there are still local manufacturers who build bespoke wooden retro boats using manual labor. The process is longer and more expensive, but you get an exclusive product.
What types of engines are used on lobster and gozzo yachts?
In former times traditional shaft drive was the only choice for boats designed for extensive sea trips. Today there is a variety of choices, and retro-styled boats are no different. Gozzo boats can be powered by pod drives (Apreamare) and shaft drives (Mulder). Lobster boats can be equipped with water jets (Hinckley) and pod drives (Grand Banks).
