Golden Globe Race: thirteen to go

Palestinian yachtsman Nabil Amra has decided to withdraw from the Golden Globe Race. He became the fifth solo round-the-world competitor to complete the race early. Only 16 days had passed since the start of the GGR in Les Sables d'Olonne.

On Nabil Amra's yacht, the autorail helmsman had malfunctioned.

The sailor announced he was pulling out of the race, calculating that it would take too long to repair or replace the helmsman before he could try to recapture the fleet.

Nabil is now heading back to the anchorage in the Canary Islands. It's not an easy journey, with headwinds of 30 knots.

During the last session, the yachtsman reported that he is 32 miles off Costa Aleje in the wind shadow of the island, so conditions have eased somewhat.

«Terribly sick at the moment. I haven't slept in, like, four days»," Nabil Amra confessed.

Let's wish him an adventure-free trip to land.

Also eliminated from the Golden Globe Race are Francesco Cappelletti (Italy), Antoine Cousot (France), Ertan Beskardes (Great Britain) and Kevin Farebrother (Australia).

Thirteen of the eighteen solo circumnavigators continue to circle the west coast of Africa.

Leading the fleet is Frenchman Philippe Pesce. His closest rival Mark Slats failed to use the chance to grab the lead after Peche's navigational error when passing the island of Lanzarote. Lanzarote. Slats not only failed to improve his position, but also lost the second place to Jean-Luc van den Heede.

Russian Igor Zaretsky is in seventh place. Igor's official Facebook page published a video of his life aboard Endurance 35 Esmeralda.
