It's more valuable than any pot of gold: the Vestas 11th Hour Racing team was able to motor to the Falkland Islands, the crew are safe and can finally enjoy a hot dinner.
On March 30, Vestas lost her mast 100 miles southeast of the Falklands. The mast broke just above the first krasp. This happened in 25-30 knot winds and three metre waves. In the Falklands, the team and the Volvo Ocean Race organizers had to find a way to get the yacht to Itajai, the host city of the 7th leg of the Round-the-World finale, so it could be repaired before the next leg. Recall, Vestas has already been repaired once: at the end of Stage 4 she collided with a fishing boat and got serious damages to the hull.
The remaining five teams (minus Scallywag, which tragically lost a crew member) continue to fight for double points on stage 7. The current leaders are Brunel and Dongfeng. Forced to make a pit stop to fix the chase and torn mainsail, MAPFRE is in last place.
