The foundation date of the Turkish shipyard Mengi Yay is considered to be 1964, but if you are nagging, this date is quite conventional. In 64th shipyard founder Ramazan Mengi was only 11 years old. It was at this age that he began his professional life. He became an apprentice at the Aivansaray Marina in Istanbul, where he helped build fishing boats and rowing boats. Over the next 12 years, Mengi has studied shipbuilding from a variety of angles, worked his way up to the master and tried himself as a trader. The logical conclusion of this stage was the foundation of his own workshop in Aivansarai in 1976. In 1985 he was joined by Muzaffer Yei. Together they decided to build large yachts. After 8 years of working together, the partners created a new company with two names on the sign, Mengi Yay Yachting.
In 1996, Ramazan Mengi died in a car accident and his son Hüseyin Mengi took his father's place in the company.
Mengi Yay Yachting Shipyard has two hangars on the outskirts of Istanbul - Tuzle, where the Turkish shipbuilding business is concentrated. Here she builds both motor and sailing yachts. One hangar (50 x 26 m) is enough for simultaneous construction of two boats up to 45 m long, the second (100 x 26 m) is designed for construction of larger caliber yachts.
«Our goal is to build yachts of larger sizes than they are now, but in response to the demands we receive,"»says Hüseyin Mengi, director of the shipyard.
Here, in Tuzla, sits the administrative office and the engineers. In addition, Mengi Yay owns production facilities in Yalova near the Sea of Marmara.
The shipyard works under the motto «Better we build less, but better - and,»in principle, it does not differ from her words. Mengi Yay sails with an average of two yachts per year. From 2000 to 2018 the shipyard has won several awards in the Turkish market. And in 2017 she won Best «Interior Design and Best»«Exterior Design nominations at the Yacht and» Aviation Awards in Venice for her three-deck Aquarius (45m) with a wooden hull.
The shipyard's portfolio includes motor yachts up to 45 m, trawler and expedition yachts, professional vessels, including those classified under archaeological research.
In the construction of sailing yachts Mengi Yay Yachting gravitates towards traditional Turkish style and develops a line of gulets. Behind the appearance of classic Turkish wooden sailing yachts hides modern vessels with RINA classification.
