The Golden Globe Race, a solo circumnavigation of the world on pre-1988 sailboats not equipped with electronics, has started from Les Sables d'Olonne. The fleet of 18 yachts - including Igor Zaretsky' s Endurance 35 Esmeralda - was accompanied by Robin Knox-Johnston's Suhaili, who won the first Golden Globe Race 50 years ago. Igor Zaretsky will have to repeat Knox-Johnston's feat, blazing a 30,000 mile route with the help of paper maps and a sectarian. He is currently in 8th place and his progress can be tracked on the official race website.
