Sailing performance trimarans are high-speed, three-hulled sailing vessels designed for exceptional agility, speed, and offshore capability. Unlike cruising multihulls, these trimarans prioritise lightweight construction, efficient hull shapes, and powerful sail plans to deliver fast, responsive sailing, often at speeds well above those of monohulls or catamarans.
The trimaran layout consists of a central main hull (vaka) and two smaller outriggers (amas), which provide stability without the need for heavy ballast. This results in lower drag and better acceleration. Many performance trimarans also feature folding amas for trailerability or easier marina berthing. They are commonly built using advanced composite materials such as carbon fibre or epoxy-infused laminates to keep displacement low. Deck layouts are streamlined for efficient sail handling, with wide trampolines between hulls and minimal superstructure. Some models are stripped out for racing, while others include spartan interiors for fast cruising.
These yachts are popular among offshore racers, performance cruisers, and solo sailors seeking exhilarating speed with multihull stability. They’re used in everything from weekend club races to round-the-world records.
