Hanuman was, as it should be under the J-Class rules, a replica (in terms of hull lines) of one of the former boats in the class: Endeavour II, built in 1937 to Charles Nicholson's design for Tommy Sopwitsch to compete in the America's Cup against Ranger. She didn't make it in the America's Cup due to unfortunate and unprofessional sails which had been stretched too much after the crossing of the Atlantic on their own and the unprofessional behavior of the crew. But today, the Endeavour II has a chance - after all, the Ranger replica also exists and takes part in regattas. The boat itself was built for a famous man in the field of computers: Jim Clark, one of the creators of the Netscape browser and Silicon Graphics. Interestingly, this is the third yacht he has commissioned from Royal Huisman: the first two were Hyperion and Athena. The name Hanuman is derived from Indian mythology, the name of the mighty monkey that accompanied the god Rama in his fight against evil. The interior of the yacht, designed by Peter Buildsnyder in his maritime art-deco style, is a masterful blend of classicist and art deco yachting, richly decorated with intricate wood carvings.
