Planing trawler-style SUV motor yachts are planing or semi-planing powerboats that combine the enclosed pilothouse and trawler-inspired exterior form of a displacement workboat with a high-deadrise planing hull capable of speeds above 20 knots. The type developed in Scandinavia — where boats serve as primary transport across archipelagos — and is optimised for all-weather operation in exposed coastal conditions rather than for sheltered-water leisure use.
The combination of trawler-style enclosed pilothouse and planing hull produces a boat capable of operating in conditions where open or semi-enclosed designs of similar size would be impractical: the pilothouse provides a weatherproof helm station, and the deep-V hull with high deadrise absorbs rough-water impact at speed. This makes the type useful for coast guard, rescue, police, and professional fishing applications in addition to private use. Compared with displacement trawler yachts, planing SUV boats are faster but carry less fuel and water relative to hull size, limiting range. Interior comfort is functional rather than leisure-oriented, with compact accommodation suited to working use rather than extended cruising.
Hulls are GRP with high-deadrise deep-V sections; deadrise angles of 20–24 degrees at the transom are typical. Inboard diesel with shaft drive is standard, providing the reliability and power reserve needed for remote operation; large fuel tanks relative to hull size extend operational range. Some examples serve in Arctic and sub-Arctic environments including Greenland and Svalbard, where year-round navigability and mechanical reliability are critical requirements.
