Category Description
Compared to racing keelboats, the dinghies have less stability and can be much easily flipped over. This is due to the design of these sailboats. Instead of the ballast keel, they are equipped with a retractable fin – a centerboard (from the German word Schwert meaning "sword"). The hulls of the dinghies are wide enough to increase the stability of the vessel. Thanks to their retractable centerboard, these boats have a shallow draft and can be moored at the shores where a keelboat cannot approach.
Many great yachtsmen started their career from dinghies: there is no better way to learn how to understand the wind and feel a boat when one has to swim to pay for every mistake of theirs.
The dinghies are a part of the Olympic program, which includes racing classes such as "Finn", "Flying Dutchman", "470", "49er" and "Laser".
