Category Description
Trends in modern professional sailing reflect the growing attention now directed toward racing catamarans. The top-level regattas such as the America’s Cup and "Extreme 40" attract the mass spectator and boost interest in catamarans Among the great variety of catamarans, it is easy to choose one that meets a specific set of criteria. The ISAF recognized class list includes catamarans from 10 to 20 ft. Most of them are one-designs, but there are also "designer" classes such as the "A-class”, which is currently the fastest single-handed yacht. Many stars of prestigious regattas, including those mentioned above, have been spotted in this class.
Racing catamarans are usually designed for a crew of one person or two persons. In the first case, it is a yacht with one sail. In the second case, it has a set of two or three sails. The "A-class" and "Hobie 14” are among the classes for single-handed sailing. The double-handed classes are "Nacra 17" (This class is part of the Olympic program and is designed for mixed crew racing), "Topсat", "Formula 18", "Tornado", "Hobie Wildcat", "Dart 18" and others. A crew of two work on the trapezes. In some classes of catamarans, there are attempts to upgrade with hydrofoils ("A-class" and "Nacra"). Almost all classes have national and international associations and hold championships at various levels from regional to international.
Managing a catamaran depends on its type and generally requires more experience and physical strength than sailing a monohull yacht. This is why not all catamarans are suitable for beginners and are rather suitable only for athletes and amateurs who are trained.
