Yachts with three hulls — the main hull and two outriggers on the sides, connected to it by beams — are very stable and have excellent sailing characteristics. Today trimaran hulls are widely used to create fast but nonetheless comfortable sport cruising yachts for long distance cruising and racing.

Reduced habitability is the price of high speeds: the saloon and cabins are situated in the main body, while the outriggers play the role of floats. Unlike catamarans, which use both hulls for accommodation space, trimarans have a comparable habitability to monohulls with a significantly larger footprint. Shipyards have solved this problem by offering trimarans with folding outriggers that can be transported on a trailer.

Commercial manufacturers of cruising sailing trimarans include such brands as Dragonfly, Corsair and Neel Trimarans.
