It looks like Sunseeker's boats will soon get bigger. At least, this was the conclusion after the unveiling of a concept motor superyacht with FlybridgeProject 8X during the Boot Düsseldorf show, which will be the first sample «of Sunseeker's new design direction for the next generation of larger models».
How much bigger «» ? That remains a mystery for now. What is known is that the «beach club alone» aft on the Project 8X will be four times larger than what Sunseeker owners are used to. This means there will be more space not only for relaxing but also for storing tenders and water toys. The happy owners of the Project 8X will be able to easily afford a Williams 460 SportJet, a jet ski and a SeaBob underwater tug . There is enough space for all of them and they can be lifted aboard by a remote-controlled on-board crane.
Furthermore, the stern can be fitted with two hydraulic bathing platforms measuring 3.2m x 2.5m, a self-leveling ladder, built-in barbecue, icebox and rain shower. Additional ladderways can also be provided along the sides and will be hidden in special storage compartments should they not be needed.
The enclosed cockpit will be separated from the aft area by motorised shutters. An open flybridge will comprise a full-fledged lounge area with not only a bar but also an ice-cream maker, sink, fridge, barbecue and cooking area. A hot tub can also be placed there. If the sun gets too intense, you can always create shade over the flybridge by extending the awning.
Forward on the main deck is an open air cinema with a 140" screen, laser projector and surround sound system. Electrically operated backrests and sun awnings in this area will be easily accessible.
The Project 8X engineers pay a great deal of attention to ensuring that boat guests have a comfortable experience outdoors. They provide sun pads, seating and tables for dining or lunch wherever possible.
The interiors, according to the yard, will be simple and sophisticated - a perfect blend of «traditional elegance with modern innovations». Depending on how future owners plan to use the yacht, they will be able to choose from a number of interior layouts during construction.
Whichever they choose, it is anticipated that as many as eight guests will be able to spend the night on the boat. They will have a master stateroom (occupying the entire beam-to-board area), a VIP cabin forward and two twin cabins aft. The five crew members will be provided with their own small galley, separate stateroom and lavatory.
According to shipyard officials, the Project 8X will be «fundamentally different from the current Sunseeker» and furthermore «will dictate the conditions in its class for the coming years». The boat is expected to be launched in 2020.
An open question remains whether the collaboration agreement signed in the fall of 2018 between Sunseeker and Dutch Icon Yachts, which the shipyards agreed to build the British yard's first aluminium boat, the 48.3m Sunseeker 161, by 2021, will have any impact on the project.
