Royal Huisman Meteor
Royal Huisman Meteor Overview
The story of Meteor's construction is quite amusing: its customer, a large Canadian car dealer, once admired a classic two-masted schooner Borkumriff IV built at the Royal Huisman yard and tried to buy it, but was refused. So he asked RH to build him "one just like her, only better. In short, the yard built a virtually identical Borkumriff IV with a few minor differences: the new boat has carbon fiber masts instead of aluminum and this makes her much lighter and a little faster, especially in slower winds. The bowsprit was also lengthened (the Borumriff IV was to be based in Antibes and the original bowsprit was not suitable in length for this harbor). Both boats, based on the famous Gloucester schooners, are very efficient on sharp courses with a 90° bow angle, similar to a monohull cruising yacht. At the same time on a sharp course with a wind of 18 knots Meteor is able to reach more than 11 speeds.
