«Salt is in our blood»: video digest for January

Kitesurfing on stilettos, stray whale and one desperate rope-walker in January review of yacht videos

After the December break, when the country celebrated the New Year for almost half a month, we are reviving the tradition of monthly video digests. And we will start our review of the best January videos with a breathtaking video shot by the organizers of Volvo Ocean Race together with Redbull. During their stay in Abu Dhabi, they pulled a rope between two VOR 65 monotype masts and called professional rope-walker Micha Kemeter to take a 22-metre walk at an altitude of 27 metres. On a rope stretched between two wave-swinging boats. Blowed by a light breeze at a speed of up to five knots. Brrr.

Good thing it was Abu Dhabi, not Venezuelan Los Roces. In this surfing paradise, a steady passat blows from December to June at an average speed of 18 knots. But there are people who don't have enough of that, such as Los Roces freestyle-windsurfing world champion Jose Estredo. When there's no wind, he uses what's at hand: airplane propellers from the nearest airport, for example.

Cool, but the kitesurfer Hannah Whitely is still far away from Mr. Estredo. The girl stood on the board wearing an evening dress and heeled shoes. Are you weak?

While the surfers were competing in originality, whales crumbled near Maui. A female with a calf easily rammed a 25-foot tourist boat that drifted with its engines off while passengers listened to mammal «singing» with a hydrophone.

The next video is for sailing enthusiasts, and it's about how short life «is a moth». A fascinating collection of Moth class sailboat accidents in slow motion from the Moth Worlds 2015 competition held January 6-16 in Australia.

It started last month and ended with a beautiful commercial from Carnival Corporation, the world's largest cruise operator. The video, which played the famous speech of President Kennedy at the Newport Yacht Club at the opening of America's Cup, was shown during the break of the Super Bowl Match for the title of American football league champion.

«We all have the same percentage of salt in our veins as the ocean. Salt is in our blood, sweat and tears. We're connected to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea as sailors or as spectators, we go back to where we came»from," Kennedy said. So welcome home, dear boat lovers!
