Category Description

The high-performance yacht category consists of boats with a sporty character, capable of reaching speeds of 40 knots and more.

While 40 knots might not seem like much in car terms, that speed becomes a whole different sensation on the water. You feel the waves hitting the hull, raising and lowering it, and a strong wind blowing in your face adds a lot to the experience. This is an exhilarating feeling of free flight, a rush that takes your breath away and pumps adrenaline in your blood. This sensation is the reason people buy such yachts. The larger and faster the yacht, the more qualified the driver must be to make the trip go smoothly. So large go-fast boats are usually piloted by professional captains who know how to make the most out of them without putting anyone in danger.

How high performance yachts are built?

Most go-fast yachts have deep-V planing hulls and powerful engines. To withstand high speeds, the hull must be strong and light at the same time, so carbon and light alloys are often used to build such yachts.

To reduce the area of the wetted surface of the hull and reduce drag, designers have long ago come up with the concept of a stepped hull. Steps are distinct notches across the hull bottom, breaking it into several planing surfaces and creating air pockets between the surface of the water and the hull itself, acting as a cushion that supports the hull. Double-stepped hulls (Formula, Donzi, De Antonio) have planing surfaces – at the bow, midhull and stern – that allow the yacht to go on plane smoothly and keep the trim angle relatively consistent.

To ensure good handling at high speeds and comfort while motoring at anchor, sports yachts are equipped with gyroscopic stabilizers, propulsion management systems, and steer-by-wire systems. Big Pershing boats also have a dynamic positioning system, which controls the position and heading of a vessel.

What types of engines are used on high performance yachts?

In small and medium sizes, brands founded by the legendary racing driver Don Aronov have a special place among the manufacturers of high-performance yachts – Formula, Magnum, and Donzi.

Formula и Donzi Marine build go-fast boats with powerful Mercury Verado outboard engines. These boat ranges are united by the concept of double stepped hull, which differs from the conventional deep-V hull.

High-performance yachts larger than 15 meters are powered by inboard diesel engines paired with surface drives or waterjets.

Larger Magnum boats are powered by inboard diesel engines with Arneson surface drives. Magnum yachts have an iconic 24° deadrise in their deep-V stepped hulls, due to which the nose literally slices through water.

Among the most spectacular names in the big high-performance superyacht league are Pershing, Mangusta, and AB Yachts. To reach top speeds, large boats use waterjets or surface drives.
