Shadow yachts, or support vessels, are auxiliary boats that travel alongside superyachts to carry extra gear, crew, toys, and tenders. Originally developed for expedition and charter use, they’ve become increasingly popular with owners who want to keep the mothership uncluttered and guest-focused.
These yachts are often converted commercial or purpose-built vessels, prioritising deck space, cargo capacity, and operational range over aesthetics. They may carry helicopters, submarines, jet skis, additional fuel, dive centres, medical suites, or entire workshop teams. Many have crew accommodation and independent navigation capability, allowing them to operate autonomously when needed.
Support yachts free up space on the main yacht for guest use and offer a safety buffer during long voyages. They also allow the mothership to remain anchored while guests explore nearby waters or terrain using the tenders and toys ferried by the support vessel. While not glamorous on their own, shadow yachts are integral to the ultra-luxury boating experience. They expand the owner’s operational capabilities and privacy—and increasingly, they’re being built to the same high standards as the yachts they serve.
