More About Sportbridge Yachts

Sportbridge yachts are planing motor yachts with a compact upper helm station — the sportbridge — positioned on the saloon roof rather than on a full flybridge structure. The sportbridge provides an elevated driving position with good forward visibility without the beam overhang, weight, and aerodynamic profile of a conventional flybridge, preserving the low, fast silhouette associated with express-style yachts.

The sportbridge itself is compact: the helm seat, basic instrumentation, and a small seating area for two or three passengers are the practical limit of the space. It does not offer the deck space, seating capacity, or social function of a flybridge. This is a deliberate trade-off — sportbridge yachts are designed as fast planing boats first, and the upper station is an addition rather than a primary feature. Hull forms are deep-V with high deadrise, optimised for speed and rough-water performance; this produces a drier ride than a flat-bottomed hull but reduces interior volume at the same length.

Construction is composite GRP or carbon-reinforced composite using sandwich layup and vacuum infusion. Propulsion options include diesel sterndrives on smaller models, shaft drives with conventional propellers on mid-size yachts, and surface-drive systems on performance-oriented builds where props run partially above the waterline for reduced drag at high speed. Waterjet drives are used on some models, offering shallow draft and excellent manoeuvrability at the cost of higher fuel consumption and reduced efficiency at cruising speeds.
