Category Description

Emphatically slow, majestic and pompous, these ships seem to strive with their whole appearance to show that time means nothing to them. Ten or a hundred years will pass, but their strong steel hulls will continue to cut through the waves, as if nothing had happened. Although the steam boilers in the engine rooms of these slow-moving yachts have long since given way to trouble-free commercial diesels, purely decorative funnels still adorn their polished and shiny decks.

The classic mahogany interiors of modern steam yachts make you feel like you're in a maritime museum. This is the spirit of tradition and romance of the good old days, when sailors were real discoverers and adventurers, which attracts buyers of private steamers.

Unfortunately, the steamboat is an endangered type of yacht. We have collected all the existing variants of such boats in our catalog. To buy a private steamship yacht, leave a request on the page of the boat you like. itBoat provides buyers and sellers of yachts with a secure escrow account for cryptocurrency transactions. On our site you can buy a retro boat not only for euros or dollars, but also for bitcoins, ether or stablecoins. If you did not find a suitable option in this category of the catalog, consider such a category as lobster boats and gozzo.

How are steam yachts built?

Steamboats have strong round bilged full displacement hulls which are made from steel. This is how the building process looks in general. Steel sheets are cut, assembled and welded. The hull is sand blasted and primed before the paint job.

The superstructure (usually made from aluminum to save weight and lower the center of gravity) is assembled separately and then joined with the hull – usually after all large items like engines, prop shafts and even living accommodation assemblies have been installed and secured inside the hull.

What types of engines are used on vintage steam yachts?

Originally steamboats were powered by steam, which was obtained by burning coal and later fuel oil. The steam drove the piston in the steam engine, the piston turned the propeller. The steam engine, as the heaviest part of the ship, was always located amidships.

Modern yachts only superficially resemble steamships. In fact, of course, there is no firebox in them, and the steam engine was replaced by modern shaft-driven diesel engines.
