More About Wooden Sailboats

Wooden sailboats are sailing vessels with hulls built from timber, representing one of the oldest construction methods in boatbuilding and still produced today for restoration, heritage sailing, and owners who prioritise aesthetics and craft over low maintenance. They range from small day-sailors to large ocean-going vessels.

Common hull timbers include Honduran mahogany, sapele, and western red cedar, typically laid over sawn or steam-bent frames. Modern wooden hulls are often sheathed in fibreglass cloth and sealed with epoxy resin, which substantially improves rot resistance and reduces maintenance frequency. Even so, a wooden hull requires more regular upkeep than fibreglass or aluminium equivalents — osmotic blistering is replaced by checking for delamination, checking caulking, and monitoring for moisture ingress.

Rigging configurations span the full range of traditional types: sloop, cutter, ketch, yawl, and schooner. Auxiliary propulsion is typically an inboard diesel or a small outboard on smaller boats. Classic wooden sailboats participate in heritage regattas including Monaco Classic Week and Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez, where condition and originality are judged alongside sailing performance. New builds are produced by specialist yards; restoration of existing hulls is equally common among owners.
