History of the company
In 1922, two brothers Jan Damen and Rien Damen organized the production of boats in a barn near their home, which marked the beginning of the history of the world famous Dutch shipbuilding corporation Damen. It was not until five years later that the company was officially formed.
Over the next 40 years, the shipyard has not been able to make significant progress. The situation changed dramatically in 1969. At that time, Kommer Damen bought the company from his father, Jan, and started optimising and standardising the production processes. This bore fruit and contributed to further development.
Nowadays Damen has an annual turnover of about €2 billion and is a leader in the production of ships for the industrial sector, military and transport fleets.
Also recently superyachts were started to be built under the Damen brand. This market has not technically become a new trend for the corporation. The company has been owned by Amels Yachts since 1991, which produces luxury custom custom boats for the private sector.
Production
The Damen Group owns 52 factories around the world and employs around 10,000 people, 1000 of whom are engineers. The companies launch 160-170 boats annually, and up to 180 boats can be launched from the shipyard slipways. In total since 1969 the corporation has built more than 6000 vessels. Besides manufacture the company offers services in service, storage and repair of boats.
Fleet
Today the shipyard offers its customers a range of SeaXplorer steel boats from 55 to 100 meters in length. The models were first announced at the Monaco Yacht Show in 2015. The models are positioned as explorers combining superyacht comfort and icebreaker capabilities, making them the first of their kind. They are designed in accordance with the Polar Code of the International Maritime Organization. This allows the vessel to sail above 60° north latitude and below 60° south, i.e. to travel to the poles of the earth. The first hulls were SeaXplorer 65 and SeaXplorer 75.
Features
The shipyard was one of the first to start building support vessels for superyachts. They are designed to store and transport tenders and water toys and are equipped with helipads, thus making room on the owner's main yacht.
