Category Description

In the 21st century, consumerism and  overconsumption have given way to conscious consumption. In many ways, this transition took place under the influence of the environmental agenda. Moderation and minimalism have become leitmotifs in the design of literally everything - from the design of application icons to the design of clothes and interiors.

The concept of minimalism is also reflected in yacht building. It is expressed in the use of simple forms, clean lines of decks, deliberate limitation of the palette and materials used in the interior.

In the early 2000s, this concept in yacht design was actively promoted by Wally Yachts. In 2003 the iconic 18 WallyPower was launched. A sleek and futuristic boat was featured in the film The Island, starring Scarlett Johansson and Ewan McGregor, and won the Millennium Yacht Design Award.

Over the time, minimalism and technology have ceased to be a trend in yacht design and have become mainstream. Today, many yacht builders are aiming for a clean and well-organized deck layout, clean hull lines and incorporating functional elements that expand use cases without cluttering up space. Evo Yachts is the bright example of this conception.

How are minimalist yachts built?

Like most production yachts on the market, minimalistic yachts are built from composite materials. The advantage of composite materials is that you can create any shape, making the designer's imagination practically unlimited.

Yachts with a minimalistic design were once something unusual in the yachting industry. They were piece goods made to order. But today, minimalist yachts are common and sell well, so production is on stream.

What types of engines are used on minimalist yachts?

There are no design restrictions for equipping a minimalist yacht with any type of engine. But since such a design is closely associated with sustainable living, there are many diesel-electric hybrids among boats with a minimalist appearance - Frauscher, Seven Seas, Marian, Navier. These are all relatively small boats not larger than 30 feet (10 meters).

On the other hand, a minimalistic appearance declares the commitment of the shipbuilder to the principles of high technology and is often accompanied by a sporty character. Charged yachts with a catchy appearance are produced, for example, by Maori and VanDutch. 45-55 feet is the most popular range for such yachts.
