Jim Smith of Grass Roots Engineering has unveiled the world's first 3D-printed kayak.
The vessel is 16 feet and 8 inches long and weighs less than 65 pounds and is assembled from 28 sections, each of which was created using a 3D printer. The sections are molded pieces of ABS plastic, they are attached to each other with slotted screws, complemented with copper tabs and treated with silicone sealant. The design of the boat is reminiscent of the Siskiwit Bay kayak designed by Brian Hansel.
The cost to create such a watercraft was about $500.
