Timeless classics

Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta through the eyes of Tobias Stoerkl

The regatta became the «successor to» Antigua Sailing Week after the sailboats, which today can safely be called «vintage», were gradually replaced by faster and more modern boats.

In 2019, 40 boats take part in the competition.

The participants were divided into ten divisions. Schooners, boats with other types of sailing equipment, modern boats stylized as traditional sailing boats, «large sailing»boats, «Dragons» and boats with design up to 1972 are competing in separate divisions.

This year the organizers have come up with four «short» and three «extended» race routes. Only Eros, Columbia, Mariella and The Blue Peter and Eilean run long distances.

Eros and Columbia (its sails can be seen in the photo) are the only representatives of their «classes» (vintage and classic schooners) and compete with themselves.

The weather is generally good for the participants of the regatta. Although on Sunday the wind caught up with the wave and complicated the life of yachtsmen, the competition still brings them joy. «You can't think of any better way to race on a sloop! Quick, wet. These boats are simply designed to climb the wave, rush down, accelerate and take off»,

Following the results of the regatta, the best crews will receive prizes in 13 categories. One of them will be the Cup «of the Most Photogenic Boat». Who gets it will be decided by photographer Den Phillips.

Wave Dissecting
