Builder Vosper Thornycroft
Vosper Thornycroft produces custom built luxury boats in the superyacht market which are presented here. The shipyard has no current production line models available.
The expression «of the glorious British shipbuilding» tradition applies to the Vosper Thornycroft shipyard. It was founded in 1866 by John Isaac Thornycroft in the English town of Chiswick. John's shipbuilding talent came to light very early on. When he was only 16 years old, he built his own Nautilus steamboat for the Thames races. Looking at the success of the young shipbuilder, his father, a famous sculptor, bought a small workshop for him, which became the basis of the famous company in the future.
Already in 1877, the shipyard built the first steamy sea-going torpedo boat ordered by the British Royal Navy, which became a prototype of a whole class of combat ships. In the following century, Thornycroft remained and continues to be a regular supplier of small and medium-sized ships to the British Navy, and in the post-war period, the shipyard began to pay attention to the private fleet.
Sailing and motor yachts Thornycroft carry the best features of the British school - reliability, seaworthiness, ease of use, attention to detail, as well as a part of the authentic DNA of real warships of Her Majesty's fleet.
The Vosper Thornycroft Shipyard continues to operate as part of the BAE Systems Arms Group, which it joined in 2008.
Production of small and private vessels is carried out at The Portchester Yard, located in Portsmouth. Following a recent £6 million refurbishment, this facility is one of the most technologically advanced in Britain and is capable of building vessels of up to 800 tonnes displacement.
Modern Thornycroft yachts are sailing and motor mega-yachts of ocean class up to 100 meters long, with steel or composite hulls and stationary motors. As a rule, they are single-hulled vessels, but the company's portfolio also includes modern trimarans. They are produced according to individual order taking into account all the customer's wishes. While maintaining a common commitment to conservative British design, the company tries to keep pace with the times, involving leading designers and interior specialists.
The main feature of all Thornycroft yachts is their unprecedented reliability and durability. There are still yachts under this brand on the market that were built over 50 years ago and are still in excellent condition.
