Father and son Vittorio and Nico Malingri from Italy have set a record for crossing the Atlantic on a beach catamaran. The pair travelled from Dakar, Senegal, to Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe, in 11 days 1 hour and 9 minutes, beating the previous record set by Frenchmen Benoit Lequin and Pierre-Yves Moreau in 2007.

The distance between Senegal and Guadeloupe is 4,725km.
Vittorio Malingri, 56, also holds the record for the fastest solo catamaran crossing of the Atlantic. In 2008, he sailed solo from Senegal to Guadeloupe in 13 days.
