Category Description

The yachts with aft cabin are a special type of pleasure boats, which are far from the mainstream. The entire space between the transom and the motor compartment in the middle of the hull is occupied by a living room, usually a master cabin. As a result, only propeller shafts are used as drives on these boats because the alternative to shaft drives – the sterndrives – must be mounted close to the transom.

The second compromise is the absence of the usual cockpit on the main deck behind the saloon. It is often merged with the flybridge or placed just below it.

However, for fans of this type of yacht, the aft cabin itself outweighs these disadvantages: it takes up the entire width of the cockpit, exceeds the master staterooms located forward on yachts of similar length and allows one to admire the wake directly from the bed. However, its main advantage is the complete privacy provided by a separate entrance, which is very important for small boats.

In most other respects, planing and displacement yachts with aft cabins are on a par with the cruising yachts with standard layouts and are very popular in some regions.
