A yachtsman in the US saved his sinking boat with the help of a vodka bottle cork.

Joseph Lehr and two friends were at sea near Rockaway Beach, New York, when their 30-foot Bayliner started to take on water: the plug of the spillway opening had loosened and popped.

The crew engaged the bilge pump and contacted emergency services.

«We plugged the hole with a metal rod, but the water kept coming in," Michael Clapman, one of Joseph Lehr's friends, recalled to The New York Post. - We tried everything from socks to other articles of clothing, but nothing worked».

Rescuers towed the sinking boat to a nearby dock. Someone local found a cork from a vodka bottle on the shore and handed it to the owner of the watercraft. Lehr used the cork as a plug for the water hole. Unlike the socks and iron rod, the cork closed the hole well. The water was pumped out of the boat, after which it made it safely to Inwood Marina.
