About

The History of Sanlorenzo Yachts

The Cantieri Navali San Lorenzo shipyard was founded in 1958 in Tuscany and for a long time built exclusively wooden vessels. In 1972 the company was bought by Giovanni Jannetti. Under his leadership, the shipyard moved into the production of fiberglass yachts. The first model was the SL57, introduced in 1985.

Ten years later, the shipyard's first superyacht, the 32-meter SL 100, was launched. In 2005, Massimo Perotti, former top manager of Azimut-Benetti, acquired a controlling interest in the shipyard. Under him, the companany's attention turned exclusively to the superyacht segment. Perotti's policy increased Sanlorenzo's turnover many times, making Sanlorenzo one of the leaders of the world yachting industry. In 2020 the shipyard was marked as the second most prolific builder worldwide for orders and production of yachts over 24 meters in length.

In 2018 Sanlorenzo introduced the Bluegame division, dedicated to the production of sports utility yachts with a length between 13 and 21 meters.

Production Facilities

Sanlorenzo's shipbuilding facilities are located in four neighbouring towns on the coast of the Ligurian Sea: Ameglia, La Spezia, Viareggio and Massa. In Ameglia, the SL, SD and SX series composites are produced while there are also facilities for after-sales service and refit of yachts. The site in La Spezia was acquired in 2016 and is now responsible for the construction of the firm's superyachts. The Viareggio production area is responsible for the firm's 100 foot plus yacht models while the Massa shipyard in mainly used for research and development purposes.

Yacht Features

It is necessary to note the almost religious attitude Sanlorenzo has to the customization of its vessels. The companan'y slogan is fitting: "Nothing is like your Sanlorenzo yacht. Not even another Sanlorenzo.". The firm's 5-step customisations process is not quite customization as it is usually understood. The client may request customization features which include not only internal layout, design and finishing options but indeed may extend to making changes to the shape and characteristics of the hull itself.

Sanlorenzo Model Lines

Sanlorenzo is building production yachts from 23 to 72 meters (75 to 235 feet) in the high end luxury segment with 22 models currently divided into 4 main production families.

The SL Range is Sanlorenzo's flagship line, featuring planing yachts ranging from 24 to 38 meters in length. These yachts are known for their elegant and timeless designs and the well known Sanlorenzo trend for almost unlimited customization options. The SL was the builders first foray into fiberglass yachts in 1985 with the SL57 model. Now, the SL line includes the firm's second smallest yacht in production with the Sanlorenzo SL86.

In 2018 Sanlorenzo teamed up with the renowned auto designer Chris Bangle to reimagine the possibilities of internal yacht design. The result was the Sanlorenzo SL102 Asymmetric, a yacht with a wide body layout on one side and a side passageway on the other - freeing up approximately 10 square meters of space in the process. Following this success, Sanlorenzo then presented the SL96 Asymmetric in 2020.

The SD Range is the firm's semi-displacement models drawing inspiration from the Trans-Atlantic liners of the 1930's. The series offers models in composite material from 28 to 38 meters in length offering outstanding range. The SD line's flagship is the mighty Sanlorenzo SD126 at 40 meters in length while in 2022 the firm introduced the entry level 27.4 metre SD90.

Launched in 2017, the promising SX range includes what the firm calls crossover yachts, a successful and refined combination of classic flybridge yachts with long range explorers. The class features a unique bow design that provides a more stable ride with increased interior space. It was an inspired choice, with the Sanlorenzo SX88 receiving multiple awards following its release.

The new SP Class is the shipyards entry into the sports motor yacht market, SP being short for Sports Performance. The 33 meter Sanlorenzo SP110 was debuted at the 2022 Cannes Yachting Festival and certainly caused a splash.

In addition to the production SL, SD, SX and SP models Sanlorenzo also classifies its superyachts into three distinct lines: Alloy, Steel and Explorer.

The Alloy Class is imagined as an innovative aluminium fast displacement yacht with excellent speed performance. The class is currently represented by the 44.5 meter Sanlorenzo Alloy featuring an owners cabin which is more like a private apartment with 147 square meters of space organized on three levels with indoor and outdoor areas with a private pool. It is a truly remarkable solution never seen before on a superyacht of this size. The slightly smaller 40 meter Sanlorenzo 40Alloy also follows the classes' approach to build and performance.

The Steel Range features five models from 52 to 72 meters with steel displacement hulls and aluminum superstructures. The flagship model is also the shipyards largest yacht, the 72 meter Sanlorenzo 72Steel.

Last, but certainly not least, the Explorer Range represented by the Sanlorenzo 500Exp is the firm's current answer to the long range expeditionary yacht market. The 47 meter superyacht features a landing pad for small helicopters, space for a tender boat of up to 7 meters and has a range of some 4500 nautical miles.
